Bursaries &
Scholarships

Where more than 120 years of history embrace the future …

All scholarships candidates (new pupils only) must complete an application form and are required to write the St Patrick’s CBC Entrance Assessment.

The following conditions apply to all bursary applications:

  • Bursaries are awarded on all-round ability or special merit (academic, sport or cultural).
  • It is for the St Patrick’s CBC Bursary Committee to decide which pupil receive a bursary and how much they receive, depending on each pupil’s circumstances. The St Patrick’s CBC Bursary Committee’s decision is final.
  • The pupil will be required to write the school’s Entrance Assessment and attend an interview at the school.
  • Should the bursary be awarded, it will be renewable until the end of the pupil’s school career, provided that the pupil meets the requirements as stipulated by the bursary committee.
  • If the application for the above pupil is successful, the parent/guardian is required to accept the responsibility of paying a reduced monthly amount agreed upon by themselves and the School. If this contribution is not paid on time as per the agreement, the bursary will be forfeited. 

A number of merit-based scholarships are offered to talented pupils. These scholarships range in value.

General Scholarships

General Scholarships are for pupils of outstanding all-round ability. These scholarships are based on the candidate’s school record and performance in the Scholarship Examination. A detailed CV, together with the pupil’s latest report, a testimonial letter from their current school’s principal  and proof of the pupil’s exceptional all-round records, including evidence of leadership potential (copies of certificates, newspaper clippings, etc.), should be e-mailed prior to the Entrance Assessment date to: scholarship@stpatricks.co.za. Based on the results of a pupil’s Entrance Assessment, she/he would be invited to write the Academic Scholarship Exams.

Academic Scholarships

Candidates must have achieved an average aggregate of at least 80% in the previous school year. Candidates applying for Academic Scholarships are required to first write the St Patrick’s CBC Entrance Assessment, if not enrolled in the school yet. Please contact Mrs Desiree Francis in the Admissions office (admissions@stpatricks.co.za) to receive the necessary Application forms. A detailed CV, together with the pupil’s latest report and proof of related achievements (copies of certificates, newspaper clippings, etc.), should be e-mailed prior to the Entrance Assessment date to:scholarship@stpatricks.co.zaBased on the results of a pupil’s Entrance Assessment, she/he would be invited to write the Academic Scholarship Exams.

Sport Scholarships

Candidates applying for Sports Scholarships are required to first write the St Patrick’s CBC Entrance Assessment, if not enrolled in the school yet. Please contact Mrs Desiree Francis in the Admissions office (admissions@stpatricks.co.za) to receive the necessary Application forms. A detailed CV, together with the pupil’s latest report and proof of related achievements (copies of certificates, newspaper clippings, etc.), should be e-mailed prior to the Entrance Assessment date to: scholarship@stpatricks.co.za. Based on the documentation receive and the pupil’s Entrance Assessment, she/he would be invited to complete a related Practical Assessment Trial.

Music Scholarships

Candidates applying for Music Scholarships are required to first write the St Patrick’s CBC Entrance Assessment, if not enrolled in the school yet. Please contact Mrs Desiree Francis in the Admissions office (admissions@stpatricks.co.za) to receive the necessary Application forms. A detailed CV, together with the pupil’s latest report and proof of related achievements (copies of certificates, newspaper clippings, etc.), should be e-mailed prior to the Entrance Assessment date to: scholarship@stpatricks.co.za. Based on the documentation receive and the pupil’s Entrance Assessment, she/he would be invited to complete a Practical Audition.

Theory requirement as a pre-requisite for the practical audition: 

Applicants must have Grade 2 ABRSM (the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music) theory at the time of the practical audition. However, if candidates have not done the exams, but are of the opinion that they are of the required standard, an internal theory exam can be written on the date as agreed. Candidates must pass this examination with at least 66% in order to secure an invitation for a practical audition on the date as agreed. Those pupils who have written a Grade 2 or higher ABRSM theory examination should submit a copy of their certificate in order to be exempt from these requirements. All pupils who have been offered a Scholarship or Exhibition for entrance in a specific school year, must have passed the ABRSM Grade 3 Music Theory exam upon entering the school in January of that that year.

Practical standard required at time of audition 

Pupils who wish to audition for a Music Scholarship for entrance to St Patrick’s CBC (Grade 8) should be of a practical standard of at least Grade 3 on a recognised classical or contemporary instrument.

Practical audition 

Candidates are expected to perform two stylistically contrasting pieces. These pieces should be chosen to reveal the candidate’s technical ability and musicianship. If a second instrument is offered, only one piece can be offered on the second instrument. Candidates will be given a quick study on the first instrument, and will be allowed 15 minutes to prepare. During the audition a candidate will be given a sight-reading test, as well as a basic aural test.

All candidates must provide their own accompanist.

All candidates will be asked to provide a short CV with contact details, and must include the following information: a repertoire list of works learned in the past year, as well as evidence of musical ensemble involvement in their present school. CVs must be sent to Mrs Phyffer (details below) by 31 July of the year prior to the school year applied for.

* Parents may not attend the auditions.
